Youth coaching

Austria German

The youth coaching programme started in January 2012 and was developed by the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Federal Social Office. First only available in Vienna and in Styria, meanwhile the offer covers whole Austria. The target group are pupils in the ninth school year. Goal of the project is the prevention of disorientation, exclusion and early drop-outs through professional counselling and assistance. On basis of surveys carried out by the class teachers of the vulnerable young people, youth coaches can be active. The implementation rules stipulated by the Federal Social Office provide a three-stage consultation process:

a. Initial interview

Young people receive comprehensive basic information. If necessary, parents or teachers of the affected pupils can also be included as important reference persons.

b. Consulting with case management approach

The focus of this stage is on young people who are struggling with disorientation and school deficits. If it is necessary for young people to take up further measures, the youth coaches ensure that a qualified transmission is made and that the follow-up is as seamless as possible.

c. Support in the sense of case management

For those young people who require comprehensive support because of their various problems, youth coaches offer needs-orientated mentoring.
